Chinese state broadcaster CCTV have announced that the death toll from Typhoon Lekima rose to 30 people on Sunday morning, with a further 18 people missing.

The storm made landfall in the eastern province of Zhejiang on Saturday, with wind speeds as high as 187km per hour, damaging 173,000 hectares of crops and 34,000 homes.

There has been widespread traffic chaos and thousands of flight cancellations, with even more to come as the typhoon is expected to reach Shandong province in the coming hours.

Lekima is China’s ninth typhoon of the year and provincial authorities have estimated that it will leave behind an economic loss of 15.57 billion yuan (€1.8 billion) according to news agency Xinhua.
