Minister for Health Simon Harris has told the Dáil that to meet the pay demands of the nurses would tilt the handling of the public finances into an unsustainable spiral.

He said it is essential that industrial action comes to an end as soon as possible and he said the Government is sincere in its offer to want to talk to nursing unions to reach a resolution.

It is the third day on the picket line with no sign of a breakthrough in the escalating dispute.
