Soccer referee injured in attack following a midlands match

Daniel Sweeney was taken to Midlands Regional Hospital after being assaulted after a match.

Daniel Sweeney suffered a suspected broken jaw and injuries to his eye and nose

His jaw appears to have been broken in two places, he has been taken to St. James hospital, Dublin for his facial injuries. Three players and a spectator were involved in the incident in a car park were Mr. Sweeney was assaulted. FAI Chief Executive John Delaney is to meet the Irish Soccer Referees’ Society to discuss the assault. Paul O’Brien (Irish Soccer Referees’ Society president) stated “We will be asking the FAI to take steps to introduce a new ‘Respect the Referee’ programme and an educational campaign to go with it.”
