An Irish Times exit-poll carried out last night had Mr. Higgins in the lead with Peter Casey receiving a late surge of support.
This is the results the Times’ exit-poll turned out last night and early counts nationwide this morning have turned in a fairly similar table of results. Peter Casey’s late surge into second place is a major surprise to many due to comments he made during his campaign ,regarding the travelling community, that prompted large swathes of people across the country to label him a racist. The support he seems to have received so far has encouraged him however and he announced this morning that he intends to run for the presidency again, unless he becomes Taoiseach beforehand.
For now however, it looks as though it will be a relatively easy victory for President Higgins and we expect his re-election to be confirmed in the coming hours.
