Mary Robinson states hard border may distrupt peace process in Northern Ireland

Mary Robinson has backed Leo Varadkar’s statement that a hard border in Northern Ireland may lead to a return to violence.

Mary Robinson said that mischief-makers may be using the hard border to cause trouble in the North. Mr Varadakar has received accusations of scaremongering when he stated a return to violence could be possibility in a post-Brexit scenario. Mary Robinson stated: “I think there is a real risk, if we had a hard border in Ireland, that there are people, as we would say, lying in the long grass, on both sides waiting to do mischief and unfortunately it could lead to that”.
