At least 60 people have been killed and dozens more injured after a train crashed into a crowd of people participating in a religious festival on the outskirts of Amritsar in northern India.
The Press Trust of India news agency said two trains arrived from opposite directions on separate tracks, giving people very little opportunity to escape. The fatalities were caused by one of the trains.
Junior railways minister Manoj Sinha said that organisers of the event did not alert railway authorities about their intention to hold the event there.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was ”extremely saddened” by the accident and that he has ”asked officials to provide immediate assistance that is required”.
