Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul over two weeks ago. Yesterday US President Donald Trump stated that it ”certainly looks” as though Khashoggi is dead. President Trump did not say what he had based his conclusions on but did add that the consequences for the Saudis ”will have to be very severe” if they were found to have killed him.
Mr. Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews that he was waiting for details from ”about three different investigations so we can get to the bottom of ” Khashoggi’s disappearance.
Turkish sources told media outlets that they believe the Saudi writer, and open critic of the current Saudi regime, was killed inside the consulate in what they described as ”premeditated murder”. Saudi officials have countered that claim insisting Khashoggi left the building before disappearing.
Sources told news site ‘Al Jazeera’ that a Turkish probe located the exact site of the Khashoggi ‘killing’ inside the Saudi consulate and by using audio recordings of Khashoggi’s alleged murder they believe an autopsy expert began cutting up the 60 year old’s body immediately after he was killed.
The investigation is still ongoing however and no formal conclusions have yet been drawn.
