Unscheduled Brussels meeting raises expectations of a Brexit breakthrough

UK Brexit secretary Dominic Raab arrived in Brussels for unscheduled talks with Michel Barnier, the EU’s chief negotiator, on Sunday evening suggesting a breakthrough may be coming soon. According to The Irish Times “EU ambassadors were summoned to a meeting that one report suggested was to get early sight of a deal.” However senior officials have said that it is highly unlikely that a deal will be reached on Sunday.

Raab’s meeting with Barnier comes ahead of a busy week consisting of six different EU summits, signalling that both the UK and the EU are eager to draw Brexit negotiations to a swift and hopefully agreeable close.
